Before I wrote this fictional horror tale in Southern Haunts: Devils in the Darkness, “Let Demon Dogs Lie,” it began Hell life as a mere slip of a legend set in the mountain town of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, about a demon dog seen on Highway 194, near a church. The small town takes its name, which is Latin for “Valley of the Cross” from the two streams which meet at right angles in the middle of the valley. There is a stone church off Highway 194, where a dog from the very pit of Hell stalks among the tombstones of the cemetery connected to the church. To escape this beast, you must reach the bridge where below it, the streams meet in a cross. Maybe this is the liquid version of a crossroads? It makes one wonder.
