Emily P. DeLoach: Escaping the Mirror
I picked this book up because it reminded me strongly of Tricia Drammeh’s novel about damaged teeneagers, The Fifth Circle, which I admired as a portrait of two young people adrift. Escaping the mirror is a novel about a young girl hauling herself through a nightmare of abuse, abandon, and oblivion in drugs and drink. The girl, nicknamed Evil, is no angel, but how could she be given the abuse she has endured since her mother upped and left? Her brother Jim is no hero, even though he has taken upon himself the role of protector. The nicest character is of course Dopey, the one who picks up the pieces after Evil shatters the mirror.
The story is told through the eyes if Evil, Jim, and Dopey, who take it in turns to relate the story of the few weeks of the start…
