For once the poems are inspired by the picture and not the other way round.
They came in a night
Of no moon and no stars
At the hour of the wolf
When the world was asleep
And they pulled up their longships
In our sheltered cove
And they left us with nothing
But our eyes to weep.

Dark night, high sea
But not wind enough
To keep back the raiders
From our sheltered coast.
So we watch for the flare
Of the beacon that means
We must flee from our homes
Taking what we love most.

The sea wolves came raiding
On the darkest deep night
With the wind from the north
And no moon to shine bright.
Their dragon prows loomed
Through the wild ocean spray
Like dragons they roared
When they took you away.
We pray for a tempest to lash…
