I thought it was an interesting one too. I’d disagree with the star rating comments, but I’ve explained how/why I rate on my blog ‘review’ post. In fact rather than starting from five stars and working down, I probably start from three and work up or down. Or start from one and work up. Stars are really to simplistic a way to rate the complexities that make up a book.
I also had some views about the expenditure side (ha). While it’s not my speciality, I do think a good cover is critical whether it’s print or internet version. As for editing/proofing services, sadly it’s luck of the draw, pay loads and get a bad job, pay less and get a good job can often apply as equally as cheap = poor, dear = good. And while word of mouth is one way to find someone, it doesn’t guarantee a good job, fair price, and as important as anything, good working relationship.
Finally, the point about sequels/series was interesting.
I’m tempted to write a similar list from an editor’s perspective.
