The 17 by Mike Kilroy, published by Fishtail Publishing has been called a cross between “The Hunger Games” and “The Breakfast Club”. Others have compared it to “The Lord of the Flies” both because it’s a coming of age story and because of the dystopian world it presents. Told in 3 parts or books, it begins with the abduction of Zack, an ordinary 17-year-old boy from Maine, by the Ankhs, who live on a distant planet. Convinced that their civilization can only be saved by something they call a “spark”, the Ankhs have devised a plan to create one by pulling together a group of 17 teenagers from all over the galaxy and pitting them against each other in various contests, trials and brutal challenges, both physical and mental.
