Vladimir Ivanoff (Robin Williams) is a Russian musician who was working in a circus in his home country Russia. The circus comes to New York, Vladimir announces his intention to defect while shopping at Bloomingdale’s.
He meets and is befreded by Lionel Witherspoon (Cleavant Derricks) a security guard who gives him a place to stay as he makes a hilarious transition from Russian to American citizen.
Lucia Lombardo (Maria Conchita Alonso). his new love helps him adjust as does his immigration attorney (and onetime Cuban refugee) Orlando Ramirez (Alejandro Rey)
