His ears were ringing in the comparative quiet of the car. It was late – later than he’d planned – but he was determined to make the long drive home rather than stay the night anywhere else. He paused for a moment and felt the calm settle around him like a thick blanket before turning the key. The car’s engine tore through the silence before settling into a rhythmic pattern of ambient white noise.
