Night Drive

His ears were ringing in the comparative quiet of the car.  It was late – later than he’d planned – but he was determined to make the long drive home rather than stay the night anywhere else.  He paused for a moment and felt the calm settle around him like a thick blanket before turning the key.  The car’s engine tore through the silence before settling into a rhythmic pattern of ambient white noise.

The party had been nice.  It was good to see friends again.  It felt like it’d been ages, but they always picked up as if it had only been days.  And despite his own inner shame, none of them ever scorned him for going so long between visits.  Not seriously, anyhow.

The engine increased its pitch as he accelerated onto the highway and combined with the rushing friction of highway winds to create a new slurry of static to numb…
