The Quotable George Orwell
Today would have been George Orwell’s 102nd birthday. In celebration, Readers+Writers Journal has assembled some of the journalist, essayist and novelist’s best and most memorable quotes.
Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair, in India, where is father was a British official. Despite the circumstances of his birth and his family’s high status, Orwell went on to be a vociferous critic of imperialism and economic inequality. His political writings have influenced generations of thinkers and writers, and his pen name, Orwell, has entered the lexicon as the adjective ‘Orwellian’, meaning any idea or social condition destructive to the welfare of a free and open society. As Christopher Hitchens wrote in his 2002 book-length essay, Orwell matters. Still.
