With windows wide, I breathe the night,
And watch the shifting web of light,
I see the hunter’s silent wings,
While in the moonlight robin sings.
The night is hot, yet I must sleep,
And so into my bed I creep.
I hit the pillow and I groan…
All I can hear’s a constant drone.
Upstairs have an electric fan
Upon which there should be a ban,
It’s echoing right through the floor…
And I’m not sleepy any more.
I hear it whirring, though it’s late,
I even hear it oscillate.
It’s still a-whirr at half past three,
It’s doing good for them, not me.
What’s wrong with windows open wide?
Why should we from the darkness hide?
Let fresh air in and mozzies out.
That’s what a good night’s sleep’s about.
I’d rather follow my old granny
Than some ‘health and safety’ nanny.
