This is one of the places I like to visit regularly, to keep up with progress, and probably to capture a few memories of urban wilderness before it all gets tidied away.
The Caserne Niel is a huge complex of military barracks, gradually wound down from the mid โ70s, before being completely abandoned and finally handed over to the municipality just over ten years ago. When the army left, the buildings inevitably fell into disrepair, and when the council inherited the site it had become an immense encampment of various east European immigrant groups.
Rather than pulling down the rather splendid main buildings, the site has become the centre of a sustainable development project and is in the process of being restored.
