Is this woman in her many phases? Her tribal leer
to fend off those deadly advances of the male;
a seasoned veteran of the wars of love, her cruel
eyes betokening the ancient power of the goddess?
What was Picasso thinking when he folded her
like a paper doll in an origami sculpture multiplied;
or was this a cubist exercise in failed manhood,
a way of staving off his own dominating mind?
Did you hate Matisse and women so much,
to darken this void within you into such ugliness;
or is this just your bid to capitalize the world of art,
shock them into the new, a realm of marred apocalypse?
Out of that pastoral world of gods and oaths,
you martialed a savage paradise full of violence;
El Greco’s Fifth Seal is sitting there in those masks,
like a promise of WWI that would be its aftermath.
