In a pleasant exchange with Nicola Ann Roberts of Lost in Publishing she made me think through my previous post on the thought of the day. As I began thinking about it this is what I said to her:
No. Not speaking of concrete nouns. Obviously that is insanity. Language forces us into its own paths by way of etymological density for sure, so one never escapes the first layers of signification. I’m not talking of the obvious or common sense reading of either poetry or things. It’s what it is. The literal object for us all appears as “table” or “chair”… that’s the most obvious thing.
What I’m talking about is the thing or object…
