Back when I was a young kid my dad was away in the British Navy most of the time and money for toys (or any treats at all) was scarce. One of the highlights of my life was when my grandmother came to visit. She worked for the Oxford University Press in London and would bring me bags of ‘seconds.’ These were slightly imperfect books that OUP had decided couldn’t be sold, so they gave them to their employees and she, bless her heart, brought them to me!
I believe those books saved my life and made me the person I am today. I read and read and read and, when I had nothing left to read, I wrote.
