“Think for a moment, Mrs.…” He ran a fingertip over the black band straddling his fedora and consulted his notepad. “Van Lyle. Why am I doing this to you? Why would a perfect stranger enter your home,chloroform you, secure you to a chair, and be involved in a profanity-laced semi-lucid conversation with you?”

Maritza narrowed her eyes and screamed, “I don’t fucking know why!”

“I do believe the ‘F’ word seems to be one of your favored epithets.” A cruel grimace chased away the small smile on his face. “Of course, with the wrong man, it could end up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.”
