“Love a Foot Above the Ground” by Anna Burke is a beautiful story about love, loss and getting past tragedy. Told from a familiar perspective, the protagonist of Burke’s crime series, Jessica Huntingdon, it is mainly about the housekeeper and mother figure of Bernadette. Bernadette, a woman who joins the family from Mexico, the woman who loved Guillermo and tragically lost him one day.
The story is quite powerful as we get introduced to it from the perspective of a young Jessica, not older than 9 at first, when she hears the wonderful love story with its many heart-warming episodes.
Having a strong bond with Bernadette and seeing her both, from a girl’s point of view, as well as at a later stage in Jessica’s life, it gives a large spectrum of reflection on the strength of this love and tragedy.
