Jenna glanced at her cell, contemplated the tabletop for a few moments, and stared at him. “It’s almost eight thirty.” She licked her lips. “You have to leave for the airport at ten, right?”
John swallowed. (Holy shit! Is this . . .? No, it can’t be.) “I could stay another hour or so. I have to be at the airport around eleven or so.”
“Could you take another one, maybe in the morning?” Her smile looked uneasy. “If you want – I could drive you to the airport.”
(The girl of my dreams just gave me a possible invitation to Heaven. I can’t turn her down. I’d look like an idiot.)
She scooted closer and reached out to caress his cheek. “I really like you.”
(God, I’ll need a psychiatrist after this night.) “Uh . . . Jenna, whatever my feelings are for you, I wouldn’t dream of taking advantage of this . . . our situation.” John winced at the hurt in her eyes. “I know you’re happy about getting the role, but you don’t owe me a thing. You earned this on your own.”
She shook her head and put her fingers on his lips. “Don’t get me wrong, John. You’re the first man in a long time that sees me for more than . . . a living fuck doll.” Her voice started to waver. “I’ve been attracted to you since we first met, but not because you gave me the part in your movie. It’s just the . . . the way you talk to me. You treat me like you would any other legitimate actress.” A single tear rolled down her face. “And that means so much more to me than you’ll ever know.”
He looked away from her, wanting badly to kiss the salty fluid from her cheek. “I’m attracted to you too. I’d be lying by saying I wasn’t. I think we should take . . . whatever this is . . . a little slower.”
Jenna took his chin again, guiding his face back to hers. “You think too much.” She smiled. “Right now we’re two people who could go somewhere more private and indulge in some really great sex.” She took a deep breath and added with a coy smile. “That doesn’t mean it couldn’t grow into something more – further down the road.”
(What the hell am I going to do? It’d be great to be with her, but what if something goes wrong?)
