It you’re looking for an erotic romance, move along, nothing to see here. There are no classic heroes or heroines, no clear cut good vs. evil, and the characters performing less than admirable acts believe they are completely justified doing so. This is not a sweet happily-ever-after story. What Vergene is, in spades, is a dark erotic thriller with a satisfying dose of suspense.
The characters are flawed, as humans tend to be, which helps make them believable. LaDonna Knowles is a wonderfully developed main character, and even if we don’t always like her, we still find ourselves rooting for her. Vergene is the perfect foil; we understand her motivation but are still stunned by the lengths at which she is willing to go in the name of vengeance.
The sex scenes are plentiful, well written and pleasingly imaginative. While the story could conceivably have been told without explicit content, an edginess would have been lost. These scenes are essential to both character development and advancing the plot.
