Interestingly, I began a career in the theatre, after studying drama and literature at university and winning a fantastic scholarship to further my studies in London and Paris. I worked in the theatre for a few years, but found it not as glamorous and exciting as I’d imagined. Perhaps I’d just had stars in my eyes or was stage struck. I drifted into writing, which seemed a natural step given my strong academic background. However, I don’t regret those years of drama training one bit because when I began writing, I found that sense of visualisation, dramatic moments, and “making it happen” for the audience served me well. I am also able to stand up and give talks, which I do regularly as a guest speaker, on almost any topic related to writing, child literacy, and books.
From editing and writing articles, I became more firmly entrenched in the world of books, and my final career step came after a trip to Egypt with my wonderful mother and my two young nephews, then aged 10 and 12. When we returned home, I decided to write them a short story, starring them as the heroes, of course. The short story became a book, which became a book series … and the rest is history. Writing Middle Grade fiction happened by serendipitous accident in a way. My young nephews’ responses to an amazing country, filled with adventure, ancient history, exotic locales, mythology, and just a sense of being somewhere so different made me (a seasoned traveller) see things through their eyes. I hope to capture that fresh sense of excitement and wonder in every adventure my young heroes embark upon.I was born and educated in South Africa, but have been fortunate to have travelled to many countries. I love history, mythology, legends, different places, and I think that has influenced my choice of writing. When I’m not researching and writing MG adventures, I work for a book review site as an editor, I teach novel writing at an online college, and I also write historical fiction (Regency romances) under the pseudonym Arabella Sheraton. I have also written two animal rescue books because animal welfare and the environment are very close to my heart.
The Chronicles of the Stone Middle Grade adventure series: Book 1: The Secret of the Sacred Scarab; Book 2: The Search for the Stone of Excalibur; Book 3: The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper (about to be published).
My animal rescue books: Champ, My Story of Survival and The Poppy Project, How Fiji’s Most Famous Dog Got Saved.
My romance novels as Arabella Sheraton: The Dangerous Duke; The Reluctant Bridegroom: The Wayward Miss Wainwright; Miss Dashwood’s Dilemma; Lord Blackwood’s Valentine Ball and its sequel The Lady’s Revenge; Married at Midnight; plus a non fiction self help guide The Secret of Love: Ten Simple Steps to Finding the Right Relationship.
All my books are available on Amazon.
