Right around my birthday this past January, as I was on my way to a friend’s house carrying a pizza for dinner, I slipped on a sheet of ice, flew into the air, and landed on my head. My first thought was not about the excruciating pain I was in. Nor was it about the pizza that was lying next to me, upside down and probably oozing cheese everywhere. My first thought was, “Please don’t let me have a concussion. I cannot lose my ability to read or write. I can’t.”

A day of willful ignorance later, I went to the doctor. While I didn’t have any apparent physical or neurological damage (a fact that I will be grateful for until the end of time), I did have a shaky, scrambled, and definitely concussed brain that needed tons of rest in order to heal. I gulped as…

Dan Alatorre AUTHOR's avatarDAN ALATORRE

img_2351-11What goes on inside the writerly mind?

Let’s sit down with our Word Weaver Writing Contest 1st place winner, Adele Marie Park, and find out.

(Like all our winner’s profiles, when they answered these questions, they did not yet know what place they had taken in the contest.)

I believe author Adele Marie Park

DAN: Did you write your story for the contest or was it part of a larger piece or something you had written before?

ADELE MARIE PARK: I wrote this story a while back, then looked at it again, edited it and sent it off to you.

Tell us about your writing process. What is the journey from idea to published piece/completed story?

The idea springs first. It can come from a myriad of places. A voice inside my head, a dream, a news story, even just washing dishes the idea implants itself. Then I write it down, I…

Facebook Ads News: Changes in Targeting

Unless you spend most of your time under a rock, you will have heard of Facebook’s troubles regarding its cavalier use of its user’s personal data. Zuckerberg was grilled in Congress and they were recently fined £500,000 for their role in the big Cambridge Analytical data scandal, which saw some 87 million Facebook users have their data exposed and used to influence political elections.

Facebook’s Response

As reported by Ron Douglas, Facebook has responded by quietly taking away targeting options that were based on sensitive data they don’t want people to know they had in the first place.

These include options built on the data provided by third-party companies like Axiom or Experian. These options are called Partner Categories and are very powerful when trying to target users based on the behaviors they take outside of Facebook. This explains why you may search for shoes on Google and…

Great Expectations..?

Sue Vincent's avatarSue Vincent's Daily Echo

It had been a month since I had last been in the north and, as I took to the road once again, there was the familiar frisson of excitement that always runs through me as the journey begins. This time, however, there was something more… a longing that hovered between fear and anticipation. Last time, the heather had just begun opening its petals… and we had enjoyed a month of unusually hot sun. Would it still be in bloom?

The moorlands that I love are where the heather flowers. Most of the year, the moors are brown and gold. When the bracken unfurls its fronds, they glow with a vivid green… and when the heather blossoms, it paints whole hillsides with its distinctive hue; the air is fragranced with honey and the land wears its soul, at once regal, soft and earthy.

The road led me through six counties and…

Cover and Query Letters #amwriting

conniejjasperson's avatarLife in the Realm of Fantasy

Just as in any other profession,  authors,  whether indie or traditionally published, must sometimes craft either a cover letter or a query letter. In business, that cover letter may go with our resume, but for authors, we must write one each time we submit work to a contest, anthology, or literary publication.

For many, avoiding having to do that is one of the reasons they went indie in the first place. However, if you write short stories and submit them, you must also write cover letters, which are a form of the query letter.

But what goes into a cover letter?

For authors, cover letters are our resume, which makes writing them quite tricky. They are one page documents, usually in the body of an email. Sometimes, if the publication uses Submittable, you can copy and paste your cover letter into a template. They may ask for it to be…

The Good Sister by Rachael Stewart #Review #PublicationDay @rararesources @rach_b52

jorobertson2015's avatarmychestnutreadingtree

Thrilled to be sharing my review of The Good Sister on publication day! Many thanks to Rachel Gilby for inviting me and for my review copy of the book!

About this book…

HE WASN’T HERS TO LOVE … BUT HER HEART DOESN’T CARE…

When Isla Evans agrees to switch lives with her rising star of a twin for three weeks, she has no idea the move will thrust her into the same bed as her teenage celebrity heartthrob, Bradley King. Trapped there at her sister’s request, she gives her desire free reign and finds herself falling hard and fast.

And she’s not alone.

Bradley wants a wife to tick all the boxes, save for one: love. It’s not part of the deal, never was, never will be. But when he returns home early to find his hopeful-fiancée behaving all sorts of different, he likes it. A lot. Suddenly, he wants…

The Truth In My Lies by Ivy Smoak @IvySmoakAuthor

Sarah Hardy's avatarbytheletterbookreviews

51HJeadsaxL._SY346_Book Description:

I’m not supposed to leave the house. But what my husband doesn’t know won’t kill him. I break his rules every morning on my runs. It’s always been best when I have a routine. So every day I wake up, run, clean the house, wish for a better life, repeat. And every day is exactly the same.

Except for Thursdays. I live and breathe for Thursdays. It’s when he comes. I watch him from a distance. I can’t help myself. But I was never supposed to talk to him.

I know what you’re thinking. But you don’t know my story. You don’t know the kind of monster my husband is. And trust me, you have no idea who I am.

My Thoughts:

I wasn’t to sure what to make of Addy when we first meet her. It’s obvious that she is scared of her husband but that doesn’t stop her…
