Young girls creeped out by older scientists constantly trying to lure them into STEM

bluebird of bitterness's avatarbluebird of bitterness

FromThe Onion.

SEATTLE, WA—With responses ranging from “squirming in discomfort” to “completely discouraged from studying science and engineering,” a nationwide poll group of high school-age girls revealed Tuesday that the nation’s young women are being utterly creeped out by scientists twice their age constantly attempting to lure them into the study of science, technology, engineering, and math.

“They’re always hanging around our classrooms and sending us targeted messages online—they sometimes even offer us money if we’re into their sort of thing. It’s so desperate,” said 13-year-old Tessa Levin, recounting the several times she and her friends had been approached by the type of much older chemical engineers or web developers who frequent science fairs with the hopes of involving girls in non-profit mentorship programs or computer programming sleepaway camps.

“They always try to treat us like we’re special, but the truth is, they’ll go after pretty much…

Every now and then, an author manages to write a character so distinctive and impactful, he becomes difficult to forget. Sometimes it’s someone inherently evil; other times the character is a beacon of good. But seldom…

“I Hate That!” Book Design Pet Peeves – by Joel Friedlander…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

on The Book Designer:

This is a story about bad book design decisions, and how to avoid them.

Jill and I visited Copperfield’s Books in Sebastapol this afternoon.

Copperfield’s is a small chain of independent bookstores here in California, and a favorite place to browse their curated selection.

As an aside, when you consider all the books that are published each year, every independent bookstore is essentially an exercise in commercial curation. If customers buy the books the bookstore buyers have curated, the store will succeed, so effective curation is an existential necessity for any indie bookstore.

In any event, Jill found a book she had been curious about and brought it over to show me.

“I would never buy this book,” she said. “It’s a mess!”

How to make writing in first-person easier

Jean M. Cogdell's avatarJean's Writing

Do you struggle with first-person narratives?

I do. Even though it’s my favorite point of view.

I love writing, and reading, first-person point of view stories. But getting it right can be a struggle. I was thrilled to read a recent post on writing techniques from Bookfox

Writing in First Person: 4 Tricks and 6 Pitfalls

The article breaks down the simple do’s and don’ts that make writing in first-person simpler and easier. And reminded me, there are some wonderful, famous authors who wrote in first-person. In addition to thousands of classic works of literature. Selecting first-person POV need not be a hindrance to good writing.

How these writing techniques clicked for me.

  • To find a character’s voice, give them attitude.
  • Do not let the narrator be dull. Don’t want to put your reader to sleep.
  • Showcase your character’s blind spot. We all have them and so should a…

Fallacy of Writing

Dan Alatorre AUTHOR's avatarDAN ALATORRE

img_2351-14 your humble host

I saw a blog post recently that was like a light bulb going off over my head.

It noted there are many websites about helping you market your book to get big sales numbers through a mailing list and Facebook groups you can join, etc., all talking about how much they’re selling – and asking for a nice big fee from you to show you how to do it – but very few of them ever mention anything about the quality of the stories!

Like you, I’ve looked into certain folks who are known for selling lots of books (and if you buy their course they’ll tell you how, too).

What about writing quality stories? It’s rarely mentioned there.

Then I said, “What about the sites that are devoted to writing?” They’re almost exclusively about craft – and they may never sell a book. Most are very…

Who?

Sue Vincent's avatarSue Vincent's Daily Echo

“You’d make a lousy feminist!”

My son’s words followed me down the garden path as I left. As a child of my generation, I am used to the changing face of the familiar, but his throwaway comment of, ‘It’s a female Doctor!’ had shocked me profoundly.

‘I suppose it had to happen eventually…’ and ‘Shouldn’t be allowed…’ were my immediate comments upon hearing the news. The thought of a female Doctor just seems plain wrong to someone who was around for the very first episode of Doctor Who. William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee and Tom Baker… it was bad enough when the face of the Doctor changed back then, but to have a sex change as well just doesn’t sit right, even though I know the storyline allows for it.

Personally, I gave up on Doctor Who after Tom Baker, though I did see the odd episode here…
