Three Things to Do Before You Start Freelance Writing โ€ฆ and Three Things Not to Bother With – by Ali Luke…

on Aliventures site:

Are you thinking about freelancing?

Iโ€™ve known a lot of writers who spent quite a while in the โ€œthinkingโ€ stage without moving forward.

Itโ€™s very understandable. Launching a freelancing career can feel like an enormous step, and you probably want to get everything right before you begin.

I was lucky, in a lot of ways: I fell into freelance writing by accident. Ten years ago, I wrote a guest post for a blog that (unknown to me) happened to be looking for paid writers. The editor asked if Iโ€™d like to join the team โ€ฆ and that was the first of many, many freelance blogging gigs.

The Odds of Advertising Your Book

WRITERS BEWARE – VANITY PUBLISHER ALERT: NOVUM PUBLISHING, UNITED P.C. PUBLISHER…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

Posted by Victoria Strauss for Writer Beware

Novum describes itself as the โ€œpublisher for new authors,โ€ whose purpose is to provide newbies with โ€œa fair chanceโ€ in a publishing market thatโ€™s rigged against them. Itย touts its service, quality, innovation, and experience. Itย claimsย to be a European โ€œmarket leaderโ€.

This is not the whole story, though the inexperienced authors who are Novumโ€™s target of choice might be hard-pressed to figure that out.

How to Evaluate Small Publishersโ€”Plus Digital-Only Presses and Hybrids – by Jane Friedman…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

In my annual chart,The Key Book Publishing Paths, there is one column that is most vexing and problematic for writers to navigate: small publishers.

Into this category falls some of the most prestigious publishers you can imagine, that can boast of New York Times bestsellers, and that writers dream of working with.

But it also includes publishers that started up last year out of someoneโ€™s home office, run by people who may not know anything more about the publishing industry than you do.
