snowed cover image for blogJesse’s daughter, Cleo, has arrived. Mike greets her, having met her before. She doesn’t waste any time offering him a job. She also has offered a job to Sarena. Mike tells her his brother might be interested and goes outside to make the call in private.

I hated to admit, but she was probably right. Gabe was tied to a place he hated, trapped in a job because of a family, married way too young because he got a girl pregnant. He stepped up and took the responsibility, but maybe he hadn’t been ready for it.

“It’s worth a shot, babe,” Sarena said. “Want some gingerbread?”

“Love some. Got any coffee?” I called over my shoulder as she walked into the kitchen.

“Just tea.”

“Pfft. . . .”

She set a cup of tea and a plate of gingerbread in front of me. I ate the gingerbread, leaving the tea…

Viv Drewa is a Michigan native who has enjoyed reading and writing since 1963. Though she studied medicinal chemistry at the University of Michigan, her passion has always been writing. She had been awarded third place for her nonfiction short story about her grandfather's escape from Poland.
